Transitions: diabetes enhances the risk of developing eye diseases

Diabetes mellitus is a devastating condition, whose rate of incidence is increasing worldwide. It often leads to various eye diseases – their number is rising in the world - and even to total blindness. These ailments number cataract and diabetic retinopathy, which cause loss of sight and blindness, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
Transitions Optical is publishing a new clinical study in the framework of the programme “Transitions Partner in Education” to build awareness of the effect of diabetes on sight, of the importance of caring for one’s sight and of adopting appropriate eyewear. The results of the yearly international survey on healthy sight reveal diabetics’ poor awareness of the disease’s effect on eyes; moreover, very few measures are taken to enable patients better face this condition’s sight-related risks.
Even the study “Healthy Sight Counselling: Diabetes on the Eye” provides extensive information on the impact of diabetes on various debilitating diseases; it also highlights the fact that diabetes and related ocular complications are also associated with lesser sensitivity to contrast and enhanced sensitivity to glare, whose combination diminishes sight. The study is authored by Dr. Bruce Bode, Dr. Leila El Matri, Dr. Paul Brant, Dr. Susan Stenson and Prof. Gary L.Trick.
“All eyes need protection against UV rays and glare, but this need is even more pressing in diabetics,” said Dr. El Matri at the press conference held at the Mido today.
Transitions also presented a series of informative material to build public awareness on the effects of diabetes on healthy sight.
“Most consumers have no idea of the essential role played by ophthalmological examinations and many fail to understand the importance of regular eye check-ups and appropriate eyewear in minimising the disease’s effects,” said Denis Fisk, Director of Global Clinical Education at Transitions Optical. “We hope that the new informative material will enhance awareness of the first symptoms of diabetes, when to adopt solutions like anti-UV and anti-glare eyewear to both meet the instant need for quality vision and prevent the disease’s long-term effects.”
The new tools comprise a set of six posters (100x70 cm), five vertical and one horizontal, with messages designed to build awareness concerning damage diabetics may experience to healthy sight and the recommended protective solutions.
